SONNYSOUTHON

THIS SHOW HAS BEEN CANCELLED TO BE RESCHEDULED FOR A LATER DATE.

For the uninitiated, Sonny is a woman with a past as colourful and engaging as her music. From a childhood steeped in sound she sang alongside her band-leading Samoan father before leaving for Sydney to become a professional songwriter. This was only the first step on an odyssey that would see her settle in London, sign to Warner Chappel Publishing UK and Virgin Records’ offshoot Siren as a successful solo artist, and sell over 100,000 records while singing alongside luminaries as varied as Duran Duran and Bob Geldof.

Sonny finally decided to return to NZ shores in 2008, after a sojourn in Los Angeles and a quick return to London. Since being back in NZ she has successfully found a path outside of music, spending satisfying years instructing yoga before once again feeling the lure of songwriting and the recording studio. From this has spawned the Movin On EP, the fruits of a co-production with renowned NZ artist and producer Lake South.

Movin On EP, her first new studio recording after a long hiatus touches on indie, electronica and hints of RnB while infused with a Balearic vibe that’s hard to pigeonhole, Sonny has created an alternative record with a strong, underlying pop sensibility. From the rocksteady groove and compelling theatricality of ‘Demons’ leading into the synth acoustic ear worm that is ‘Make Love Fall’, via the clarion call of ‘No Means No’ , the record takes it’s bow with the Fleetwood-esque bittersweet optimism of ‘Moving On’. This is a fully realised record of delectations and surprises, made with surefooted craft and rediscovered creativity. The Movin On EP reflects an artist working at the peak of her powers, drawing from a life of truly unique experiences both in and out of the vocal booth.

2020 is the year to discover this re-emerging talent: both as a compelling recording artist and a naturally charismatic live performer with one of the most unique voices in New Zealand music.

The first single from the EP is ‘Demons’ and is available to stream on all platforms.
