Welcome to our Human Rights Film Festival.

In collaboration with Amnesty International, this four-film four-day (20-23 September) mini-festival is open to members of the public on a first-come-first-served basis with free entry to all screenings (koha/donations always appreciated).

This screening is director Will Watson's ‘Soldiers Without Guns’.

The riveting journey of NZ Army soldiers as they land unarmed into the heat of the 10-year Bougainville civil war using only the weapons of music, Maori culture and love to create peace. This radical idea of sending soldiers without guns was condemned by the media because they felt the soldiers would be massacred given the first 14 peace attempts had failed.

A multi-award-winning film about which Stuff's Graeme Tuckett said, "Soldiers Without Guns made me prouder to live in this country than any film in recent memory. Go see it."

A New Zealand production, 2019, 92 minutes, M rating.

The Canterbury Film Society meets every Monday night (with breaks for public holidays) at 7.30pm (plus some additional screenings, like this festival) at the Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna o Waiwhetū. We have membership prices to suit every pocket, eg a Flexi-Pass costs $30 for three films, may be shared amongst friends and has no expiry date. New members are warmly welcome and are asked to come early to speak to our membership team. (Downloading a membership form from our website and filling it in before you come is helpful.) Doors open at half-an-hour before the screening time for socialising and for sales of food ($2) and drink ($2–$5). Please assist us by bringing in no outside food or drink. Thank you :)

For more information about our 2020 programme and membership options, to view the trailer and request text or email reminders about our weekly or special events, go to our website – link above.
