Conversations between RNZ and the Labour-led government have indicated that the widely beloved RNZ Concert (also known as Concert FM) will be saved for now, though its future remains uncertain. New Zealand’s musicians and arts lovers are coming out in force in nationwide marches to ensure the FM station—which has shown continued growth in audience numbers (173,000+ weekly listeners) since its inception in 1933—is protected for the long term.
At the Aotea Square sing-in speakers will include Geraint Martin, chair of the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra and former recent CEO of Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa, and actor and singer Te Atamira Jennifer Ward-Lealand, who has just been named the 2020 Kiwibank New Zealander of the Year. The event’s musical director is leading conductor David Squire.
For New Zealanders who would like to support the publicity and staging of the marches but cannot attend in person—or wish to extend extra support to the organisers—a Givealittle page is receiving donations.
All donated funds will be used to meet the costs of staging the nationwide events and producing banners, posters and other material to promote the national marches in support of RNZ Concert. Any surplus funds will be used to support the ongoing legal process to protect RNZ Concert.
Supporters can also join the 'Save RNZ Concert' Facebook community.
