Riki Gooch and Jeff Henderson are embarking on a North Island tour to coincide with the release of a double album of saxophone/clarinet and drum duets on iiii Records.
The pair have along history of music making together and have collaborated on numerous projects including the minimal drone trio ‘The Metabolists’ with David Long (The Muttonbirds), Riki’s behemoth ensemble ‘Eru Dangerspiel’, wild psych/blues unit ‘Superstarz’, faux ethno-futurist quartet ‘The Slowdown’ (with Parks and Chris O’Connor) and numerous other adventurous music groups.
Both musicians grew up in Dunedin and met in Wellington during the creatively fertile ‘90’s through studies at the Conservatorium of Music.
After over twenty years of collaborating and musical exploration the duo have a telepathic intuitive communication which they will share throughout the North Island this March/April.
Bios:
Saxophonist/composer Jeff Henderson has performed throughout the world and NZ with many luminaries of the jazz, experimental and popular music scenes including long associations with Richard Nunns, Marilyn Crispell, Upper Hutt Posse, Red Mole Theatre, Mike Nock and many more.
He is featured on recordings by Purple Pilgrims, Lawrence Arabia, the Phoenix Foundation, Plan 9, Little Bushman and many more. He lives in Auckland where he runs the national Sound Art organisation Audio Foundation.
Riki Gooch is renowned as a brilliant drummer, music producer and composer who has worked with a who’s who of NZ music including as a founding member of Trinity Roots, with Neil Finn, Shayne P Carter, Ladi 6, Ria Hall, Fat Freddies Drop, Bic Runga and Orchestra of Spheres to name a few. Riki has created an astounding amount of music under the monikers Eru Dangerspiel, Cave Circles and DJ Oboe, ranging from electronic dance music, music for film and television, large ensembles and solo performance. He has won awards for best music in a television series, multiple.
This (NZ Music awards) with Trinity Roots and best Maori album (with Ria Hall). Currently, Riki is developing a unique approach to improvised conducting and is researching large ensemble improvisation.
