Christine Hellyar was born in 1947 in New Plymouth. She completed a Diploma in Fine Arts (Hons) at the Elam School of Art in 1970. In a career spanning 50 years, with shows in Australia, the USA, England, Holland, Spain, Hungary, Japan, Korea and Singapore, Hellyar has made and exhibited over 2000 works - 750 sculptures, 15 large installations and countless paintings, drawings and photographs. Her work is held in most New Zealand public collections, including the Auckland Art Gallery, Govett-Brewster Art Gallery, Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa and the Christchurch Art Gallery.

“Pretty Tools & Silly Weapons” is an autobiographical exhibition, looking back at Hellyar's works from 1977 onwards. The ideas in many of the works relate to ancient technologies and to museum practices, both things Hellyar is recognised for. The works incorporate a wide range of materials, from found natural items such as Hibiscus, coconut, stones, and feathers to silk, paper, ribbons, copper, lead and bronze. "I have always enjoyed putting opposites together so peace and war, and soft and hard resulted in Pretty Tools and Silly Weapons."

Many of the works were created in 2015 and have been exhibited only once - in the Pah Homestead, TSB Wallace Arts Centre, Auckland (2015). The 6 Claims works are totally new. They compare painting and sculpture and make use of ideas related to ownership. In these 6 works, there are approx. 2000 signed, miniature paintings representing a lifetime’s work.
