Congratulations! You made it through another week! Great job – I think we’ve earned ourselves a bit of open mic and feature time, don’t you?

As you will be aware of by now – Your Place aims to be an international community of poets and art lovers, so we try our most to be attentive, not just to current affairs in New Zealand, but also worldwide.

It is Black History Month in the UK and to help us commemorate, celebrate and educate we have the incredible treat of, Windrush Foundation & Equiano Society Poet in Residence – as well as BBC East regional Poet, Nairobi Thompson featuring at Your Place this Sunday!

If you haven’t heard of Nairobi then I suggest you have a read of her bio below, watch the videos we will be posting this week, and get to know because she’s good! If you have heard of her, you’ll be there.

Described as a poet of our time Nairobi is a published writer, academic editor and a passionate performance poet. She has written and performed for Baroness Doreen Lawrence, Carmen Munroe MBE, Mayor of London Sadiq Khan, and Lord Ouseley. Nairobi has her own brand of interactive One Woman Show (including 2 specifically about the Windrush generations and life in England). She has produced 7 short films (4 of which capture the political contexts of the Windrush experience).

Her deeply researched and eloquently delivered work covers a myriad of topics from the African Diaspora to sensuality and sexuality and World War 1 & 2 to social commentary and female empowerment.

Nairobi is an all-round talent delighting audiences all over the UK, Europe and America with her humour, clever use of words and edutainment approach. And now she’s coming to New Zealand!

Do not miss this.
As always, this event at Your Place is pay-what-you-can-afford, because finances should not be a barrier to art. However, if people do not honour that trust-system then this event becomes unsustainable and cannot continue so if you can afford it, please do – the money goes towards paying our artists and keeping this whole thing up and running.

And if you cannot afford anything, still come along and enjoy the poetry with my blessing (though do please help us out by sharing the event and getting some other folks along – that’d be amazing!) – we believe in human kindness at Your Place, so hopefully, someone who can afford it will pay a bit more and cover you.
