Whoop whoop! It is open mic and feature time at Your Place! It is also Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori (Māori Language Week) – something I am not anywhere near as knowledgeable as I would like to be in; our feature, however, knows much more than me!

Go to Facebook Page for viewing link.

The last couple of shows we have been introduced to spoken word artists from the UK via our feature spot so it’s time for the rest of the world to meet a prominent voice from over here in Aotearoa: Michael Moore!

Michael Moore is a spoken word artist and creative developer from the Waikato, a descendant of Taupiri Maunga, Tainui Waka, Waikato Awa and Ngati Maniapoto iwi.

As a proud father of two young daughters, many of Michael's ambitions are shaped with their futures in mind.

As a writer he attributes his inspiration to the words of his Tipuna (ancestors), both near and far, and focuses his pen on scribing new horizons for young indigenous men adrift in the modern world. Working as a creative developer and spoken word artist in the Waikato he uses his roles to work in corners of his community, bringing transformative art and creativity to the lives of people who often miss out.

Michael has performed and held writing workshops across the country and abroad, he has also been the recipient of writing residences in both Australia and Canada and his most recent travels have opened him up to story telling in a new light. Michael has published poetry in a number of anthologies and is the National Director for New Zealand Poetry Slam.

As always, this event at Your Place is pay-what-you-can-afford, because finances should not be a barrier to art. However, if people do not honour that trust-system then this event becomes unsustainable and cannot continue so if you can afford it, please do – the money goes towards paying our artists and keeping this whole thing up and running.

And if you cannot afford anything, still come along and enjoy the poetry with my blessing (though do please help us out by sharing the event and getting some other folks along – that’d be amazing!) – we believe in human kindness at Your Place, so hopefully someone who can afford it will pay a bit more and cover you.
