Join us for a blessing, artist talk and a humorously provocative performance presentation to open The Dowse Art Museum’s latest exhibition, 'Ngā Hokohoko'.

'Ngā Hokohoko' explores the kaupapa of hokohoko–exchange, trade, barter–within the contemporary jewellery community in Aotearoa.

Featuring some of the most innovative jewellers from the past 40 years, 'Ngā Hokohoko' charts connections and contrasts in materials and pivotal influences such as mātauranga Māori and Pasifika adornment.

The exhibition includes the work of Pauline Bern, Matthew McIntyre-Wilson (Taranaki, Ngā Māhanga and Titahi), Neke Moa (Ngāti Kahungunu, Kāi Tahu, Ngāti Porou, Tūwharetoa), Professor Alan Preston, Joe Sheehan and Dr Areta Wilkinson (Kāi Tahu, Kāti Mamoe, Waitaha).

After a conversation between the jewellers and curator Gina Matchitt, renowned New Zealand jewellers Professor Alan Preston and Dr Areta Wilkinson will revisit their prestigious keynote presentation on cross cultural practice and the history of studio jewellery in Aotearoa, first delivered at the Schmuck international jewellery symposium in Munich, 2016.

Curated by Gina Matchitt (Te Arawa, Whakatōhea) 2019 Blumhardt/Creative New Zealand Curatorial Intern.
