We celebrate Te Wiki o te Reo Māori with a night of storytelling, where speakers share their personal journeys with te reo Māori on the theme of kia kaha te reo Māori.

There will be complimentary kai, along with drinks available for purchase.

In partnership with Wellington City Council.

Speakers include:

Councillor Tamatha Paul (Ngāti Awa and Waikato Tainui) is a Wellington City councillor for the Pukehīnau/Lambton Ward. She was first elected to Council in 2019, having previously been the first wahine Māori president of the Victoria University of Wellington Students' Association.

Talia Marshall (Ngāti Kuia/Rangitāne ō Wairau/Ngāti Rārua/Ngāti Takihiku) is a poet and essayist with one son and one dog who has a poetry collection forthcoming from Kilmog Press titled Bad Apple. In 2020 she is writing about Ans Westra’s photographs of Māori as part of her Emerging Māori Writer’s Residency at Victoria University.

Poia Rewi (Ngāti Whare, Tūwharetoa,Te Arawa, Tūhoe, Ngāti Manawa) is the current CEO of Te Mātāwai. He was previously the Dean of Te Tumu, the School of Māori, Pacific and Indigenous Studies at Otago University and is well-known for his work in Māori language revitalisation.

Martin Awa Clarke Langdon (Waikato-Tainui, Ngāti Whāwhākia, Ngāti Hikairo, Kāi Tahu) is a multidisciplinary artist, curator and educator. Langdon has exhibited and curated throughout Aotearoa. His interests lay within the duality of his upbringing with Māori and Pākehā world views.

Tama Sinclair Kirikiri (Te Whānau-a-Apanui, Ngāti Konohi, Ngāti Rākaipaaka, Ngāti Kahungunu, Kāi Tahu) is a trained former Primary school teacher who has been working in tertiary education for the past 9 years. He is passionate about te reo Māori and Māori development and is a vocal advocate for change in the New Zealand education system.

Karepa Wall (Taranaki, Manukorihi, Ngāti Ruanui, Te Ati Awa and Ngāti Tūwharetoa) has been involved in Māori medium education for over 16 years and holds several Māori language leadership roles, including as a Director for Te Kāhui Tūroa, Ngā Uki o te Mounga, Ngā Paiaka and Te Tahua Kete along with being the Chairperson for Te Kōhanga Reo o Ngā Mokopuna and a Senior Manager Te Reo Māori at the Ministry of Education.

Our MC for the evening is Tānemahuta Grey. Tānemahuta is currently the Kahukura / CEO of Taki Rua Productions and has 25 years professional experience as an event producer, theatre director and choreographer.
