Acclaimed Wellington-born harpist Ingrid Bauer who holds the position of Principal Harp with the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra will explain the intricacies of the harp to us and play.
A former student of Alice Giles (AM), Judy Loman, and Carolyn Mills, Ingrid was described as a “fantastic new find” by Musica Viva Australia’s artistic director Carl Vine (AO). Ms. Giles ranks her as “undoubtedly one of the best harpists of her generation in Australasia”.
As a soloist, Ingrid has performed with Bach Musica (Auckland), the Australian National
Academy of Music Chamber Orchestra, the Bay of Plenty Symphonia, the Kapiti Concert
Orchestra, and the Wellington Youth Orchestra. She was a quarterfinalist in the 2nd Dutch
Harp Competition, and an invited participant in the 2009 ARD International Music Competition. Ingrid has also given solo recitals across Australasia, and has a solo CD, Dreambird, on the Master Performers label.
Ingrid is a keen chamber musician. Her flute/viola/harp trio Toru toured for Chamber Music New Zealand in 2018, and she also enjoys a less conventional musical partnership with trombonist Peter Maunder in their duo Parp!. Ingrid performed at the 2014 Huntington Estate Music Festival, where she shared the stage with Emma Matthews (sop.), Geoffrey Collins (fl.), and the Amaryllis Quartet, among others. Additionally, Ingrid is a founding member of the Australian harp septet SHE. SHE’s performances have included the 2018 Canberra International Music Festival, the 2014 World Harp Congress, the 2013 Beijing TV Spring Gala, the 2010 Camden Haven Music Festival, and the 2006 American Harp Society Conference. SHE released its debut CD, Bolmimerie, in 2010.
Ingrid has a commitment to showcasing work by New Zealand composers. The title piece on her CD was written specifically for her by young New Zealand composer Tabea Squire. Ingrid performed this piece, and gave the Australian première of Ross Harris’s Rilke Songs, at the 2014 World Harp Congress in Sydney. Toru also commissioned a new trio from Squire for their 2018 tour.
Ingrid has performed in all of New Zealand’s professional orchestras, including as Acting Principal Harp with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra. She has also worked in the Queensland, Tasmanian and Adelaide Symphony Orchestras.
She also holds a Masters degree in Philosophy, and so can discuss, at some length, how you know that this could have been printed in a different font.
