Northart Gallery

On Auckland Anniversary Day, Northart celebrates the Lunar New Year with several special performances and the opening of two exhibitions of Chinese art. The formalities begin with a traditional tea service by Tingcha Studio. This will be followed by Qipao modelling (costume) and vocal and instrumental performances.

The first of the two exhibitions, 'Tales of Light and Shadow 光影故事' showcases a series of Chinese traditional shadow puppets collected by the New Zealand Shadow Puppet Art Troupe, calligraphy works by Juyi Yu, and farmers’ paintings collected by the same artist. The concept of farmer paintings originated in the 1950s when, with the aim of bringing art to the ‘ordinary people’, the Communist Party encouraged rural communities to engage in painting.

In the other show, 'Lan 蕙质兰心' Chinese female artist Wei Lan Wang combines traditional ink painting techniques with contemporary ideas, depicting modern images of Chinese women and the world through their eyes. Her works reflect on the natural beauty of the female, flowers and on traditional culture.

The exhibitions will be open daily 10am to 4pm from 28 January to 12 February, with the exception of Waitangi Day 6 February, when the gallery is closed.

And in a Lunar New Year-themed workshop on Sunday 2 February from 1.30pm to 3.30pm, talented members of the New Zealand Shadow Puppet Art Troupe will tutor children on making paper shadow puppets. All materials are supplied for this free class, suitable for three to five year olds, and no bookings are required.
