Lincoln Efford Memorial Lecture 2020: Slave Patrols, Jim Crow and Present-day Policing of Black Bodies - Adele Norris

Please join us for this annual memorial lecture honouring Lincoln Efford. A past patron and Treasurer of the WEA he was passionate about social justice and prison reform. This year we are delighted to invite Adele N. Norris, a Senior Lecturer from University of Waikato, to be our speaker.
Hyper-visualized examples of anti-blackness and the prevailing lack of value of Black life is not new and distinct but connected to a long history of abuse at the hands of the state. It is essential to distinguish between violent murders of unarmed Black people by law enforcement and the systems that allow such atrocities to occur with little accountability.

Adele Norris will discuss what happened in the U.S 150 years after the abolishment of Chattel Slavery before looking at the New Zealand context. She will explore both our colonial history and what the Black Lives Mater Movement must mean if we want meaningful change in both New Zealand and the world. She will speak about the high rates of imprisonment among Indigenous people in New Zealand and reference material from her recently co-edited book titled, "Neo-Colonial Injustice and the Mass Imprisonment of Indigenous Women".

Adele N. Norris is a Senior Lecturer in Sociology and Social Policy in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, University of Waikato, Hamilton, New Zealand. Adele’s scholarship engages black feminist frameworks to explore state-sanctioned violence against black and brown bodies.
