Letter from Masanjia – Canterbury Film Society

Dates

  • Sun 20 Sep 2020, 2:00pm–3:20pm

Restrictions

All Ages Licensed

To Film Enthusiasts city-wide.

Welcome to our Human Rights Film Festival.

In collaboration with Amnesty International, this four-film four-day (20-23 September) mini-festival is open to members of the public on a first-come-first-served basis with free entry to all screenings (koha/donations always appreciated).

This screening is director Leon Lee's ‘Letter from Masanjia’.

When a letter written by a Chinese political prisoner is found in a box of goods sold in Oregon, it sparks a chain of events that exposes human rights violations in the Chinese labour-camp system.

'An example of documentary at its most aspirational.' - Andrea Gronvall, 'Chicago Reader'.

A Canadian production, 2018, 75 minutes, E (exempt from classification).

The Canterbury Film Society meets every Monday night (with breaks for public holidays) at 7.30pm (plus some additional screenings, like this festival) at the Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna o Waiwhetū. We have membership prices to suit every pocket, eg a Flexi-Pass costs $30 for three films, may be shared amongst friends and has no expiry date. New members are warmly welcome and are asked to come early to speak to our membership team. (Downloading a membership form from our website and filling it in before you come is helpful.) Doors open at half-an-hour before the screening time for socialising and for sales of food ($2) and drink ($2–$5). Please assist us by bringing in no outside food or drink. Thank you.

For more information about our 2020 programme and membership options, to view the trailer and request text or email reminders about our weekly or special events, go to our website – link above.

VENUE: During this time of changing COVID-19 levels please visit the CFS website prior to attending each screening to check the venue.
