How healthcare training can benefit from Waikato’s world-leading medical research

Featuring University of Waikato academics and healthcare experts, this panel discussion will explore Waikato’s role in reimagining healthcare training in a research context. This kōrero will introduce some of the medical research being conducted at the University, as well as a range of perspectives on issues relating to regional healthcare.

The panel will be facilitated by University of Waikato Deputy Vice-Chancellor Research, Professor Bryony James. Moderated audience questions will form part of the discussion.

Information about the Panellists:

Professor Roger Strasser, Professor of Rural Health, Te Huataki Waiora School of Health
Professor Strasser joined the University of Waikato in May and is internationally recognised for his leadership in promoting innovative approaches to primary health care in rural and remote areas. Most recently he was the Founding Dean and CEO of the Northern Ontario School of Medicine in Canada and has an international reputation for developing strategies to train health professionals in and for rural communities.

Professor Ross Lawrenson, Professor of Population Health
Professor Lawrenson MD, FRCGP, FFPH, FAFPHM divides his time between the University of Waikato and Waikato District Health Board, where he is Chair of the DHB Research Advisory Committee and President of the Waikato Postgraduate Medical Incorporated Society. He is also a PHARMAC Board member and is active in health services research into cancer, diabetes and chronic conditions.

Dr Anthony O’Brien, Associate Professor of Mental Health Nursing
Dr O’Brien has had a career in mental health nursing spanning nearly five decades. His many research contributions have led to changes in nursing practice as well as police operational guidelines in mental health emergencies. Dr O’Brien was made an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit in the 2020 Queen’s Birthday Honours.

Dr Waikaremoana Waitoki, Senior Research Fellow, Māori and Psychology Research Unit
Dr Waitoki (Ngāti Hako, Ngāti Mahanga) is the President-Elect of the New Zealand Psychological Society and a registered Clinical Psychologist. She is a member of He Paiaka Totara - the Māori Psychologists network. She is also a member of the Suicide Prevention Office Māori Advisory Group and the Australian Medical Council Aboriginal and Māori Advisory Group.

Dr Joanna Hicks, Senior Lecturer, Biological Sciences
Dr Hicks works at the interface of biochemistry and infectious disease. Her research focuses on how bacterial pathogens are able to grow and survive in unique, often inhospitable environments, and evade host immune responses. Identifying new targets within bacteria for the development of new antibiotics to overcome resistance to antibiotic treatments is central to this research, which is one example of how medical research at the University of Waikato is at the forefront of global healthcare developments.
