You may know her as Wellington‘s herbaceous and curvaceous burlesque songstress Whoopsie Daisy, but on Thursday June 4th, my friends, it’s time to get intimate with the woman behind the glitter - it’s jazz raconteur & chanteuse herself, Miss Lauren Armstrong. In her debut live-music performance at the capital’s premiere queer bar, expect a dazzling set list of everything from jazz standards to gay favourites to risque twists on modern hits (and perhaps even a costume change or two).
Armstrong will be accompanied by two of her favourite tuneful toyboys - Mr Hikurangi Schaverien Kaa and Mr Christopher Yeabsley on drumset and electronic organ respectively.
Born and raised in Wellington, Lauren Armstrong’s voice is influenced by the style and character of 1920s New Orleans. Having graduated from the New Zealand School of Music (BMus) , she performs regularly in Wellington and around New Zealand with vocal group “The Victory Dolls” as well as leading a few of her own ensembles. A Wellington icon in her own right, she regularly works alongside many local luminaries in the New Zealand jazz scene.
This is a sumptuous, one-off, definitely queer affair not to be missed.
