FRIDAY 23rd October 'HONEYLAND' (M) 10-30am /6pm / 8-15pm

We were offered the film when it was first released earlier this year but we had no dates available and then it was short listed for the Lopdell Film Festival but that had to be cancelled and so now is the time for this masterpiece in film making. It is no wonder it was nominated for 2 Academy Awards (Best Documentary feature and Best International feature film in 2019) and it won three awards the Sundance Festival.

"As a film maker for over 30 years I watched this film in total amazement. The secret for good documentaries is to be able capture people's life stories and experiences without any intrusion or manipulation, to show it how it really is. Having watched the film twice I still find it hard to work out how directors Ljubo Stefanov and Tamara Kotesvska managed to be there to capture the essence of every day life, the hardships, the moments of simple joy. This is an outstanding example of anthropological cinema...there is no narration and much of the dialogue isn't subtitled, allowing the visuals to tell the stories with impressionistic flair" RK

'Honeyland' definitely has echoes of 'Jean de Florette' but there are no villains here, just people trying to do their best for their families. The filmmakers spent years with their fascinating, complicated heroine and let their images speak for themselves: there are no caption cards here, no narration, just Hatidza’s endlessly expressive face. But the time they lavished on her, and the care and attention they gave to the edit, pays off in intimate storytelling and stunning cinematography.
Stunningly beautiful and quietly powerful, this is a portrait of a vanishing way of life and of a determined woman who’s just trying to make her way in the world.
We will also be screening a short film (8 mins) featuring the two directors talking about how they made this masterpiece in film making, this will be shown straight after the main film.
Tickets $15/ $12/ $10 from eventfinda.co.nz and on door if not sold out.
A FILM NOT TO BE MISSED.
