Archaeology of Wainuiomata
The Wellington region has a rich archaeological heritage dating from the first Maori settlers in the 13th century until European settlement in the 19th century. The resource rich Wainuiomata coast is littered with numerous significant archaeological sites, yet their importance largely remains unknown to the general public.
Also unknown is the important 19th century European archaeological heritage which is located in the Wainuiomata Valley. This archaeology provides fascinating insight into the first Europeans to occupy the area. This talk aims to highlight some of the best sites and artefacts in the Wainuiomata area, and tell the story about what they suggest of the history of the area.
Various historical artefacts will be on display at the talk, and in the Museum.
