From day one since it opened its doors in Feb 1970, the Govett-Brewster was no ordinary gallery.
Founded by feminist and pacifist Monica Brewster ‘not to follow but to lead’, it’s challenging exhibitions bring the world to New Plymouth, wowing thousands of visitors and making millions of dollars for local businesses every year.
The summer holidays may be done, but the fun isn’t over in New Plymouth. We’re breaking out of the Gallery, taking over the street, and bringing out the art with a summer street party to celebrate 50 years.
It’s your Gallery, it’s your party!
Among the day’s festivities you can expect:
- Interactive art
- Live music
- Participatory workshops
- Food trucks and cash bar
- A special project by artist Reuben Paterson
- Biggest Govett-Brewster Collection show
- World premiere of Len Lye's Sky Snakes
