The next General Meeting of the Tauranga Historical Society is on Sunday 4 October 2020 from 2pm in the Chapel at The Elms Te Papa Tauranga. Open to all, the $2 koha includes afternoon tea.

This month's speaker: Pat Old has been spinning the fibre from harakeke for many years. In 2014 she embarked on 4 years of study at Te Wānanga o Aotearoa towards a Bachelor of Māori Art, with raranga (Māori weaving) her specialty.

She has always been interested in the historical techniques used in the making of ancient korowai taonga and has used research gathered during a visit to the Auckland Museum to guide her in weaving korowai for her own whānau.

During this presentation Pat will show detailed images of some of the ancient taonga stored in the museum as well as of her own method of spinning muka and weaving her own taonga korowai. She will bring korowai and kete to illustrate her talk.

Here’s a story about Pat from 2018: https://www.rnz.co.nz/national/programmes/teahikaa/audio/2018661586/pat-old-my-life-is-enriched-by-learning-te-reo-maori
