The workshop: This is an introduction to mask technique and movement-based theatre. The workshop aims at the basic knowledge of movement analysis, the state of play, stage presence, improvisation, the economy of gesture and clear articulation of physical action through the study of neutral, larval, expressive and Balinese masks. Participants will be able to experience the foundations of physical and vocal expression, and the rules of theatre game.

The teacher: Pedro Ilgenfritz is a theatre teacher, director and researcher in the areas of clowning, improvisation, theatre masks, community theatre, methodologies of acting training and theatre history and theory, with experience spanning more than 25 years in Brazil, New Zealand, Australia and Italy. He is a senior lecturer at Unitec - Performing and Screen Arts Department with Bachelor in Acting - UDESC/Brazil, Masters in Theatre Directing - MTA from Victoria University of Wellington and Toi Whakaari/New Zealand Drama School; and currently a PhD candidate at University of Auckland researching the dissemination of Jacques Lecoq’s theatre pedagogy in New Zealand and Brazil.

Prerequisite: Intermediate (3 – 4 years of improv/acting experience). A level 2 series will happen later in 2020, with this level 1 as a prerequisite.
