Children’s Art with Northart
'Celebrating Matariki' July School Holiday Programme
with Northart Art Educator Lucy Bucknall

‘Matariki’ meaning eyes of God or little eyes, is the Maori name used to describe a cluster of seven stars that appear around this time of year and represent the start of Maori New Year. It is one of the closest star clusters to the earth being 440 light years away!

According to Maori legend, when Ranginui, the sky father, and Papatuanuku, the earth mother, were separated by their children, the god of the winds Tawhirimatea became angry and tore out his eyes and threw them up to heavens.

To celebrate Matariki, Northart’s Art Educator Lucy Bucknall has created an exciting 2-week programme of art activities for children aged 7-14 years. Each day has a different focus and children will get the chance to create 3D sculptures, drawings, paintings, fabric paintings, clay sculptures and more. Access a full programme on our website: https://www.northart.co.nz/event/childrens-art-with-northart-july-school-holiday-programme

Join us for the week or for a day!

Bring some morning tea and lunch, water bottle and a suitable apron or art shirt for getting creative. All art materials will be provided.

Lucy Bucknall is a North Shore based visual artist and art educator experienced in teaching children, young people and adults.
