Come and enjoy a beautiful concert with talented musicians led by Mark Menzies, head of the string department at the University of Canterbury. They will be performing Vivaldi Recorder concerto “La Notte” RV 439, Concerto Grosso "BEATLES GO BAROQUE" and other hidden gems of Baroque music.

LILY DOAK is a recorder player and clarinettist who is completing her final year of Burnside High School who is also completing the first year of a music degree at the University of Canterbury majoring in performance music. Next year she will continue this degree and also begin a beginning a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry. She has always loved performance on both clarinet and recorder. This year she was a national finalist in the New Zealand Chamber Music Competition and a member of the New Zealand Secondary Schools Symphony Orchestra and principal clarinet of the Burnside High School Orchestra. She has also taken up conducting this year, as the student conductor of the Burnside High School Junior Concert Band. She has been delving into both the contemporary and baroque techniques of recorder and will be travelling to Australia for a recorder workshop in early 2020.
MARK MENZIES Described in the Los Angeles Times as an ‘extraordinary musician’ and a ‘riveting violinist’, Mark Menzies’ career as a viola and violin virtuoso, chamber musician and pianist, conductor and advocate of contemporary music, has seen performances in Europe, Brazil, Mexico, Australia, Japan, New Zealand and across the United States.
TOMAS HURNIK has a rich musical career performing with Czech symphonies, recording for radio and television, winning various chamber music competitions and taking part in prestigious chamber groups such as Talich Chamber Orchestra. He has played with various period instrument groups such as Musica Florea, Capella Regia Prague and Solamente Naturali with which he performed and toured around Europe. He is now the associate principal in Christchurch Symphony and continues to be passionate about period instrument playing and organizes and performs in concerts, workshops and masterclasses of Baroque music in New Zealand.
DANIEL COOPER is a postgraduate student at the University of Canterbury, studying towards a MMus in conducting with Professor Mark Menzies. In 2018 Daniel graduated with a Bachelor of Music with First Class Honours in performance organ from UC. Daniel works as a freelance performer, conductor, and teacher throughout Christchurch and holds numerous musical leadership roles within the community. Daniel thrives on pushing the limits of accepted practices and interpretations, to challenge audiences expectations and open them up to a whole new way of thinking and listening.
