The Auckland Youth Orchestra, conducted by Antun Poljanich, presents:
Cowdell - Cressida
Weber - Bassoon Concerto in F Op.75 (soloist: Ricky Shi)
Tchaikovsky - Symphony No.5
Shakespeare's "Troilus & Cressida" was the inspiration behind NZ composer Alexander Cowdell’s "Cressida", written for clarinet, piano and chamber orchestra. The work encapsulates “the instinctive elements of musical expression – love caught in a world of rational but destructive emotion – war.” – SOUNZ. First performed in London forty years ago in 1979, the work has been revised by the composer - hear the new work on its first outing!
Weber’s bassoon concerto is amongst the most popular in the bassoon repertoire. Weber heightens drama and showcases the virtuosity of the soloist using various techniques – be prepared for some thrills!
The programme comes to a climax with a performance of Tchaikovsky’s magnificent 5th Symphony. Its haunting melodies, exquisite solos and lush orchestration combine to create one of Tchaikovsky’s most-loved works.
AYO is a full symphony orchestra comprised of 75 of Auckland's most talented young musicians (ages 14-24). AYO toured to Germany and Slovenia in 2018, receiving standing ovations from capacity audiences at their six performances - don't miss this experience!
