Join artists Sorawit Songsataya and Ayesha Green in conversation with the gallery’s Assistant Curator Contemporary Art and Collections Hanahiva Rose.

They will discuss their recent projects, including Sorawit’s work Rumours (Mermaid), currently on display in the Open Window on Queen Street; and Ayesha’s Ayesha Lukas and Jordan series of watercolour paintings, which was this year acquired into the Govett-Brewster collection.

One of the Govett-Brewster’s three 2020 digital artists-in-residence, Sorawit Songsataya’s practice explores the many tangents that connect and redefine our understandings of subjectivity and ecology. Songsataya often employs moving image, objects, and sculpture within installed environments, incorporating both digital and tactile media to engage with world-making in imaginative and tangible ways. Winner of the Molly Morpeth Canaday Award 3D (2020) and National Contemporary Art Award (2016), Songsataya has held artist residencies with Enjoy Contemporary Art Space, Wellington; McCahon House, Auckland; and the International Artists Studio Program, Stockholm.

Recent exhibitions include The Interior, Auckland Art Gallery (2019); Offspring of Rain, Enjoy Contemporary Art Space (2019); Jupiter, Te Uru Waitakere Contemporary Gallery (2019); Soon Enough: Art in Action, Tensta Konsthall (2018).

Ayesha Green (Kai Tahu, Ngāti Kahungunu) is an artist based in Ōtepoti. She graduated with a Bachelor of Media Arts from Wintec in 2009 and went on to complete a Master of Fine Arts from Elam in 2013. In 2016 she completed a Graduate Diploma in Arts specalising in Museums and Cultural Heritage. In 2019 she was announced the winner of the National Contemporary Art Awards and earlier this year she received the inaugural Springboard Award through the Arts Foundation.

Recent exhibitions include: Wrapped up in Clouds, Dunedin Public Art Gallery (2020), Strands, The Dowse Art Museum (2019); Tuia - Southern Encounters, The Hocken Gallery (2019); Elizabeth the First, Jhana Millers (2019) and Living Portraits: Mata Raurangi, Auckland Art Gallery (2019). She is a co-chair on the Board of Trustees for The Blue Oyster Art Project Space and is currently working on a sculpture commission for The Octagon, Dunedin.
