Join us for a very special evening of solo Bach Sonatas and Partitas each performed by a violinist from the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra. Don’t miss this rare opportunity to experience first-hand, in the intimate setting of the beautiful Pah Homestead, six of New Zealand’s finest world class professional violinists play this famous and significant Bach series.
After the forced break in performing, these six musicians have greatly missed playing live and are keen to put their consummate talent to the technical challenges of Bach’s series. We thank them for generously volunteering their time and expertise for this concert. Proceeds from the event will be donated to the APO Orchestra Relief Fund. Tickets include a glass of wine during the interval.
About Bach’s Series:
The sonatas and partitas for solo violin are a set of six works composed by Johann Sebastian Bach, consisting of three sonatas da chiesa in four movements and three partitas in dance-form movements. The Sei Solo a Violino senza Basso accompagnato (Six Solos for Violin Without Bass Accompaniment), as Bach titled them, firmly established the technical capability of the violin as a solo instrument.
The set was completed by 1720 but was not published until 1802 by Nikolaus Simrock in Bonn. Even after publication, it was largely ignored until the celebrated violinist Joseph Joachim started performing these works. The second Partita is widely known for its Chaconne, considered one of the most masterful and expressive works ever written for solo violin. Today, Bach’s Sonatas and Partitas are an essential part of the violin repertoire, and they are frequently performed and recorded.
Programme:
Liuyi Retallick: G minor sonata
Rachel Moody: B minor partita
Lauren Bennett: A minor sonata
Andrew Beer: D minor partita
Yanghe Yu: C major sonata
Yuri Cho: E major partita
