The World Press Photo Exhibition can be seen from 29 June- 28 July 2019 at the Smith & Caughey’s Queen Street, Auckland CBD. This traveling exhibition, unique in its kind, is the result of a worldwide annual contest on press photography and is brought to Auckland by the The Rotary Club of Auckland.
2019 Photo Contest
The World Press Photo competition is the world’s leading contest for professional press photographers, photojournalists and documentary photographers, setting the standard for the profession. The 2019 contest drew entries from around the world: 4,738 photographers from 129 countries submitted 78,801 images.
The World Press Photo Contest nominees are 43 photographers from 25 countries: Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Czech Republic, Egypt, France, Germany, Hungary, Iran, Italy, Mexico, Netherlands, Norway, Philippines, Portugal, Russia, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Syria, Turkey, United Kingdom, United States and Venezuela.
Of these nominees, 14 photographers are women (32%), which means a significant increase from the 2018 Photo Contest, when 12% of the nominees were female photographers.
