The newly released book Whitiki! Whiti! Whiti! E! Maori in the First World War explores the impact of the war on New Zealand society. From a population of 50,000, more than 2200 Māori served in the First World War; more than 330 of them died.
In this presentation you will hear some of their stories, told in detail for the first time in this book. Dr. Soutar is a senior historian with the Ministry for Culture and Heritage and was the World War One Historian-in-Residence at the Auckland War Memorial Museum He has worked widely with iwi and Māori communities.
Currently he is leading a digital project on Treaty of Waitangi Settlements in New Zealand.
