Tuia te muka tangata ki uta: Weaving people together for a shared future.
Tuia 250 Encounters Marlborough Children's Art Exhibition.

Dual Heritage - Shared Future
He rae ki te rae, he ihu ki te ihu, te hau ka rere, te ha ka tau
A meeting of peoples, a mixing of cultures, a blending of heritage, a sharing of future.

An exhibition of work created at the school art extension Jarratt Create and Educate workshops will be on show at the public art gallery from 16 November. Activities and public programmes for children will be offered with the exhibition.

In July 2019 Year 5-8 Marlborough students were nominated by their schools to attend curriculum-based Tuia 250 - Encounters themed art workshops. These workshops led Peter and Ellen Jarratt from Create and Educate were centred on local stories written by Rina Pinker. Work produced at the workshops forms the heart of a special exhibition at the public art gallery on at the time when we are commemorating Tuia 250 - Encounters in our region.

In November, Aotearoa New Zealand will acknowledge 250 years since the first sustained onshore meetings between Māori and Europeans with a national commemoration called Tuia – Encounters 250.

Tuia 250 will recognise the extraordinary voyaging traditions and cultures of Pacific voyagers and their decision to settle in Aotearoa many generations ago as well as the feats of European explorers and their first encounters with the people of this place when James Cook, Tupaia and others on the Endeavour sailed around Aotearoa in 1769.

Tuia 250 Ki Tōtaranui is a community commemoration of the first encounters between Māori and Europeans in Marlborough.
