To some, Post World War One English Art would seem to pale into insignificance compared to European and later, American Art. However, England didn’t lack for artists, and in view of the shattering experience of World War One, it is not surprising that a sense of home and of identity should be a dominant motif. Linda is a passionate art historian and lecturer who loves to share her knowledge and enthuse others.

Session 1: The Artists of St Ives were a varied group who developed a range of perceptions about where they were and what they saw.

Session 2: The Remarkable Eccentric: Stanley Spencer. Classically trained at the Slade School of Art, Spencer’s ability to draw with accuracy and sensitivity is second to none. After serving as an Army Medic in World War One, his imagery became extraordinary in its visionary capacity. No-one seems to have dubbed Spencer a Surrealist but his highly personalised vision of actuality challenges every convention about how things look.
