The Te Pourewa Project is an iwi and community approach to celebrate and commemorate the dual heritage and shared future of Aotearoa New Zealand.

In 2019, Te Aitanga-a-Hauiti and the Uawa Community will host a suite of Te Ahikā commemorations and events. Te Pourewa Ki Ōpoutama – The Beacon of Light and Welcome at Ōpoutama will take pride of place among the other initiatives planned.

Te Pourewa is our metaphor, a beacon of light of warm welcome as it has been down through the ages. A warm bright welcome for the nation and the world to hear and understand: Our Story, Our Voice, Our Place.

The Beacon of Light will be a 12 metre structure that is lit at night through to early hours in the morning. The structure and light will tell the story of the settlement of our bay, our region and our country.

Te Pourewa will be unveiled in Uawa (Tolaga Bay) on 7 October 2019 at 10.00 am. This event is open to the public.

This event is part of the Tuia – Encounters 250 programme.
