Come down to Te Manawa (corner of Tūtanekai and Hinemoa Streets) and take a journey through the long white cloud to experience the world premiere of this immersive sound and light celebration of Matariki.

This free art installation will be open daily from 5pm until 10pm between Wednesday 3 July and Sunday 21 July 2019.

As you enter one end of the cloud you are drawn into a transformative journey of light, sound and the stars above. Matariki, the cluster of stars also known as Pleaides, rises during mid-winter and marks the beginning of the Māori New Year.

Te iwa a Matariki, the nine stars of Matariki, are linked to the elements of the natural world; the lakes and oceans, the soil, the trees, the elements. Matariki signifies reflection, hope and our connection to the environment. These themes will pair with a specially composed soundscape by James Webster (Te Arawa, Tainui).

James used traditional taonga pūoro (singing treasures), to compose this unique piece of music which, like the Māori language, reflects the sounds and rhythms of nature and the environment.

On Wednesday 3 July at 5pm everyone is invited to the opening of Song Cloud followed by James Webster performing some of his composition using taonga pūoro.

Song Cloud was created by artist studio Amigo & Amigo in collaboration with Otis Studios and Litepix.
