2019 is an important year for Hector’s dolphins! The government is reviewing dolphin protection. A series of science meetings have been held over the last year, with the next and last workshop scheduled for 22 February.
There have been four meetings in Auckland and Christchurch with representatives from the fishing industry, government, conservation groups and scientists, to discuss goals and protection options. A public discussion document is due out in March. Professor Liz Slooten, Jesus Valdes and Lindsay Wickman will give an update on their research and will let you know what you can do to help in the next couple of months.
