Rongonui – Taonga mai ngā tāngata, ngā wāhi, me ngā takahanga (Treasured taonga from people, places and events), shares significant Māori taonga, treasures, relating to famous people, places and events.

Learn about major rangatira, chiefs, Māori-Pākehā relationships, famous battles, land loss, contemporary Māori artists and more.

All the taonga on display are held in the Hawke’s Bay Museums Trust collection – the only exception being the hei tiki belonging to Kahungunu (forefather of Ngāti Kahungunu iwi). Information presented is from a combination of written and oral sources.

Collectively these taonga tell significant Hawke’s Bay and Aotearoa, New Zealand, stories.
