This exhibition features images of early/ancient rock art, or cave paintings, discovered in sites around Aotearoa and shows how these images have been/continue to be referenced in contemporary works by both Maori and Pakeha artists (and used, in some instances as decoration in popular culture. Although the latter has largely ceased with respect to its cultural significance).
Rock Art Aotearoa touches on many issues, such as colonisation, cultural appropriation, the sanctity of tradition versus the inevitable metamorphosis/evolution of cultural forms and symbols and the subsequent subversion of history.
