Dr Joe O’Callaghan
Joe is a physical oceanographer at NIWA. Her work focuses on understanding regions of the ocean – the coast and shelf seas – where New Zealanders work and play. The range of projects Joe has worked on are broad, from fish farms in the Marlborough Sounds, to tailrace flows in Doubtful Sound, to continental shelf dynamics on the West Coast, South Island. She has led numerous observational campaigns around Aotearoa, from small coastal vessels through to NIWA’s RV Tangaroa.

The latest observational tools Joe uses are ocean gliders, which are emerging at the forefront of ocean science. She will talk about new insights discovered from ‘roaming robot’ missions around New Zealand.

Beautiful Science Gallery.
