To encourage and recognise good dog owners, we offer a reduced dog registration fee for people who achieve Responsible Dog Owner (RDO) status. We’re partnering with Animal Services Wellington & Hutt Valley to offer a free training session to help you become an RDO.
There are limited spaces available so booking is essential - to secure your place, please register by emailing wgtnrdo@huttcity.govt.nz.
This is a dogless event; just bring yourself and a pen. You’ll need to answer questions at the end of the course to qualify.
This course will cover:
- Criteria for qualifying as an RDO
- Why being an RDO is important
- What type of fencing is suitable
- What type of shelter/housing is suitable for your dog
- Can you still be RDO if your dog is classified as menacing – and what makes a dog ‘menacing’
- How can you lose your RDO status
- The law and regulations around owning a dog – and why we have those laws
- Microchipping – when and why it is required
- What Councils are empowered to do
- Dog registration fees – what do they pay for?
- When your dog should be on a lead
- WCC bylaws and policies
- What ‘controlling your dog’ actually means
- Prohibited places for your dog
- How to protect your animals in an emergency – what should be in your pet preparedness kit
