Religious Fundamentalism & Religion & Nonviolence

The ‘Contemporary Issues in Religion’ series focuses on special topics in the study of religion and addresses a different issue or theme each Term. The four Term topics currently being offered in this series are: “Religious Fundamentalism, Extremism & Terrorism,” “Religion and Nonviolence,” “Other ’Isms,” and “New Religious Movements.” Each Term class may be taken independently of the others and there are no prerequisites. Classes may be joined at any time throughout the year.

EarthDiverse is pleased to announce its Term 4 Religious Diversity classes in Tauranga in our ‘Contemporary Issues in Religion’ series, entitled “Religious Fundamentalism & Religion & Nonviolence.” The Term 4 Tauranga class will continue with the Term 3 topic of “Religious Fundamentalism, Extremism & Terrorism,” looking at Buddhist and Sikh Fundamentalism.

The remainder of the course with look at the topic of “Religion and Nonviolence” and will explore peaceful forms of nonviolent religious practice, discussing key issues ranging from the Jain concept of ahiṃsā, the Hindu concept of satyāgraha, and the Jewish notion of Tikkun Olam, and others. It will also explore key historical figures like Mahātmā Gāndhī, Martin Luther King, Khān Abdul Ghaffār Khān, and others.

When: Tauranga classes meet on Tuesday evenings during Term 4 from 6:00-8:30pm. Term 4 classes in Tauranga begin on Tuesday 22 October 2019, meet weekly for eight sessions, and end on Tuesday 10 December 2019.

Cost:
- Waged: $104 per person per term (8 sessions; includes $4 online registration fee)
- Unwaged/Student/Senior: $84/person (8 sessions; includes $4 online registration fee)
