With the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots this year, we thought it'd be a great opportunity to get together and talk about something important: queer history. We've got an unusual phenomenon in our community, where because of events like the AIDs crisis a lot of the inter-generational communication and passing down of knowledge you'd usually see hasn't happened. Quite literally we've lost a lot of our queer elders, and with them a lot of our history.

But all is not lost! The information is out there, it just takes some work to find it. Let's get together and learn—there'll be films, talks from invited speakers, and chances for discussion. For this first iteration, we'll gather, eat shared kai, and watch Major!, a 2015 documentary that explores the life and campaigns of Miss Major Griffin-Gracy, a formerly incarcerated Black transgender elder and activist who has been fighting for the rights of trans women of color for over 40 years.

Miss Major is a veteran of the Stonewall Rebellion and a survivor of Attica State Prison, a former sex worker, an elder, and a community leader and human rights activist. She is simply “Mama” to many in her community. Her personal story and activism for transgender civil rights intersects LGBT struggles for justice and equality from the 1960s to today. At the center of her activism is her fierce advocacy for her girls, trans women of color who have survived police brutality and incarceration in men’s jails and prisons.

Gather at Space Academy from 5:30pm, dinner together at 6, and screening begins at 6:30 (but we can keep on snackin'). Our potluck motto is: Bring what you can—even if it's just yourself! Got the time, energy, and resources to go all out making a big dish? Please do! Only able to grab some snacks from the supermarket on the way in? Great! Can't bring anything? No worries at all—we'd rather you were here with us than missing out. Space Academy will also have food available, and they can order Alligator pizza direct—so if it's easier those are options too!

Accessibility info: Space Academy is wheelchair accessible, and has accessible, gender neutral bathrooms. Major! will be close captioned.

Free entry but koha to Space Academy for hosting us is appreciated.
