Thistle Inn proudly present Wednesdays with Peter Black - Jazz Pianist

Composer/Pianist Peter Blake's music career began playing keyboards in Arkestra, The Quincy Conserve, 1860 Band and Hello Sailor - all iconic bands in his native country New Zealand. He toured the world playing with the Rodger Fox Big Band, performing at the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland and recording with US jazz heavyweights John Scofield and Tom Harrell in New York.

As a sideline, Peter produced New Zealand pop and rock television programmes throughout the 1970s and 80s, and more recently composed scores and themes for many long-running New Zealand television programmes, including nightly One News, Olympic Games coverage, World Cup Rugby and many hit drama and documentary series.

He wrote the music and opening theme to The Lionman - New Zealand's most successful television series selling to 120 countries. His anthemic tune New Zealand-Kainga Tuturu is a classic Kiwi track often used to promote New Zealand tourism globally and is a crowd favourite at All Blacks and Black Cap test matches.

Inspired by his recent travels and evenings spent in the jazz clubs of Paris, Berlin and New York, Peter has returned to his first passion - performing contemporary jazz piano. This time he is combining both his writing and playing skills and performing his newly self-composed material. He sites his prominent influences as Bill Evans, Herbie Hancock, Keith Jarrett and Brad Mehldau, but believes his original style is a fresh approach to solo piano.

Boasting a large repertoire of original pieces peppered with some jazz interpretations of classic tunes ranging from bluesmen Eric Clapton and Gary Moore through to songsmith Jimmy Webb, Peter can provide sophisticated solo entertainment befitting of any venue or occasion, from black tie events and cocktail receptions to a more upbeat bar or club setting.

He is relishing the opportunity to showcase both his composing and playing skills and providing audiences with a unique and compelling jazz experience.
