New Music Central - Menotti's The Old Maid & the Thief

The Old Maid and the Thief is a one-act opera, divided into 14 scenes. It follows a few weeks in the life of Miss Todd, an upstanding citizen yet gossipy busybody. We learn that she has not had a romantic interlude for over forty years.

She lives alone with her maid Laetitia a pretty, young woman who is terrified of becoming an Old Maid like her employer. It is clear that Miss Todd is regularly visited by another nosey gossip, Miss Pinkerton. During one such visit there is a knock at the back door announcing the arrival of Bob, a beggar. Love, lies, theft and manipulation abound as this story unfolds!
