Mindfulness focuses on slowing down and becoming deliberate in your thoughts and actions, facilitating an increased awareness of one’s external environment and of the internal thinking and feeling processes that result.

Originating from Eastern philosophies, mindfulness is underpinned by a solid and growing evidence base which has seen it quickly become a mainstream way of assisting people to realign unhelpful thinking and behaviour, promote wellbeing and alleviate suffering.

The approach has grown so rapidly in recent years that many helping professionals are still not truly familiar with this new perspective and its rich, gentle repertoire of interventions.

This workshop provides helping professionals of all backgrounds with the opportunity to develop a practical insight into mindfulness, with specific attention on its successful application with children and young people.

Some of the key content areas include:
- A conceptual overview and practical introduction to mindfulness.
- A simple and contemporary behavioural model to guide mindfulness-based interventions and help formulate case plans

Practical mindfulness techniques, exercises and interventions which will:
- help people become more mindful and develop a stronger commitment to positive change in their lives
- assist young people to develop mindfulness skills to overcome emotional problems such as depression, anxiety, anger and self acceptance
- help the practitioners develop their own mindfulness skills

An overview of mindfulness influenced approaches such as Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR), and Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT).

- Mindfulness interventions for use with parents and/or families
- How to integrate mindfulness techniques with other intervention approaches
- Developing practice materials and homework exercises to help children and young people foster mindfulness in other areas of their life.
- Attendees will leave with the confidence to immediately incorporate mindfulness techniques into their work with children and young people.

Dr. Koke Saavedra (Doctorate in Psychology) is a US based Clinical Psychologist and mindfulness practitioner. He has previously worked in San Francisco for ‘Seeds of Awareness’, teaching mindfulness to children and young people both therapeutically and in the classroom.

He trained and practiced at Berkeley California and is the past Clinical Director of the Berkeley Cognitive Behavioural Therapies Clinic. Koke currently works clinically for the Kaiser Permanente Medical Centre in San Francisco Bay Area, ultilising mindfulness approaches with children and adolescents.

His vast knowledge and experience of mindfulness combined with his dynamic and thoughtful presentation style mean this is a training opportunity not to be missed for all professionals working with children and young people.
