Celebrating Fijian communities and heritage in Aotearoa New Zealand through traditional dance and music.

You and your families are warmly invited to enjoy two original meke during Macawa ni Vosa Vakaviti | Fijian Language Week 2019. Meke Aotearoa is timed to coincide with the United Nations International Year of Indigenous Languages.

Daunivucu, Alipate Mainasau (Ovalau; Director of Te Mana Performing Arts school) and Joana Monolagi (Serua; Coordinator of Fiji Village at Pasifika Festival) have created a seasea (women’s standing dance) and a meke i wau (club dance).

Pan-tribal meke performers and vakatara (musicians) will be drawn from Auckland schools and communities. This is the first time original meke celebrating Fijians living in Aotearoa New Zealand will be created and staged.

Meke Aotearoa continues the Fijian tradition of transmitting knowledge through language, traditional dance, and music.

Supported by Auckland Council as part of the Pacific Arts Programme.

Daunivucu: Alipate Mainasau (Ovalau)
Daunivucu + Regalia: Joana Monolagi (Serua)
Coordination + marketing: Seta Monolagi (Tailevu) and Luisa Tora (Kadavu)
Meke tutor: Lusia Monolagi (Tailevu)
