Elizabeth Lissaman: New Zealand’s Pioneer Studio Potter - Jane Vial and Steve Austin in conversation with Cathie Bell.

Marlborough-born Elizabeth Lissaman was arguably New Zealand’s first pioneer studio potter. She designed, threw, decorated, fired and sold her earthenware pottery continuously for almost 70 years.

Award-winning art historian and curator Jane Vial meticulously researched and wrote her story, and Steve Austin, executive director of the Marlborough Heritage Trust and Marlborough Museum, contributed an essay placing Elizabeth’s work in the wider international context.

Jane and Steve discuss what makes Elizabeth and her pottery so special with journalist Cathie Bell.

Jane studied at Canterbury and Victoria Universities and graduated with an MA in art history. Steve taught art history and theory before working at the City Gallery, Wellington, The Dowse Art Museum and the Nelson Provincial Museum.
