Have a go! This six-week / eight-module course is intended to introduce you to the skills and techniques that make story-telling so enjoyable. You might already keep a journal, or have written some poetry or short stories, but would like to discover the tools professional writers use to make their work publishable.

John Cranna, Winner of the Commonwealth Writers Prize shows you how to create powerful scenes; how to knit these scenes together into a riveting story; how to show rather than tell; how to write sizzling dialogue. We also look at the musicality of language, and the poetic effects that create memorable sentences. You will learn the five common traps that beginner writers fall into.

As you progress you will begin to discover your own authentic voice. We work singly, in pairs and in a group and your work is received and reviewed in a supportive way but with some constructive feedback as to how to improve. By the end of the course you will have completed a story of your own choosing. We also provide you with a reading list for future guidance, plus a free follow-up workshop later in the year.

Thirty Creative Hub graduates have published novels or been successful in national writing awards in the last three years. See our Reviews and Successes page. Some of John Cranna's graduates are now publishing in New York and London.

In the online version of this course, we expertly guide you through the eight modules of the course, providing you with feedback at each step of the way. You will up-skill at your own pace, to the point where you will feel free to express yourself in your own voice, and with a new range of skills.

Graduates of the Introductory course receive a 10% discount on our 30 Week Fiction / Memoir Course, taught by some of NZ's leading authors.

Tutor John Cranna, Director of the Creative Hub, is the winner of the Commonwealth Writers Prize for Best First Book, and the NZ Book Award for Fiction. He was voted Best Post Graduate Teacher by students at AUT University. He also edited NZ's largest circulation magazine for five years.
