The Canterbury Trio showcases the artistic excellence of past and present staff from the University of Canterbury’s School of Music: violin lecturer Mark Menzie and former lecturers Michael Endres on piano and Edith Salzmann on cello. They come together to present a stunning programme of masterpieces from the piano trio literature. Haydn’s 41st piano trio is a kaleidoscope of moods and characters, ranging from stately and elegant to tragic and comic, all balanced with the mastery and finesse that Haydn is so reputed for. The startling and intense trio “Vitebsk” is one of the only works by the celebrated American composer Aaron Copland to engage directly with musical materials reflecting his Jewish heritage. Finally, Schubert’s magisterial and beautiful second piano trio, whose poignant second movement was used to incredible effect in Stanley Kubrick’s Barry Lyndon, rounds off a programme of stunning and dramatic music.
