This workshop will be a taster of a very ancient classical dance form of South India called Bharatanatyam.

Bharatanatyam for beginners will focus on the dance craft: movements, posture, coordination, balancing and some hand gestures. The workshop will provide an opportunity for you to learn a few beginners’ movements and what it takes to balance yourself in an unusual half sitting position to coordinate your hands and legs to perform an adavu, or step, in Bharatanatyam. You will also learn to perform the Namaskaram that marks the beginning and the end of a class or a performance.

At the end of the workshop, you will be encouraged to watch Natraj School of Dance perform on the community stage in the Town Hall, to understand the level of stamina and nuances in the dance form that a dancer needs to train themselves in to present a flawless performance.
