Created by the 2019 Furnware Youth Ambassadors. [Change of Venue from Printed Programme]

“Light is common on the surface; rare in the depths.” – Marty Rubin

Our rangatahi have dreams, hopes and aspirations… we’ve all been there, and we all understand that some things lie beneath the surface. When you plunge in deeper, block out the rest of the world, you can truly feel at one with yourself. Each plunge we take can lead us in a different direction, for better or worse, but we always come up for breath. Beneath the Surface is a culmination performance by our 2019 Furnware Youth Ambassador programme.

This piece is a compilation of scripts, interwoven with narration and music that have been selected to culminate in a touching performance of discovery, desire and determination. The Furnware Youth Ambassadors are supported in their exploration by director Lisa-Jane Easter and the work is devised and compiled by Daniel Betty.

The Furnware Ambassador Programme is about supporting the next generation of performance creatives. Each year a group of senior secondary students, aged 15-20 are enabled to participate in elements of the Harcourts Hawke’s Bay Arts Festival, both on stage and behind the scenes, with opportunities to engage with professional practitioners, develop their skills, devise original work and take up leadership roles in our Festival of Youth.

“Here at Furnware, we’re all about inspiring young minds and that’s why we continue to support the Education and Ambassador Programmes. We love supporting young people in activities that fuel their curiosity and unleash their imaginations. Like the group before them, this year’s Ambassadors are a group of creative, innovative and fresh young minds and we wish them a wonderful learning experience by being part of the Festival.” - Hamish Whyte CEO Furnware
