Kevin and Caroline’s farm in Karaka is an animal sanctuary, home to their dog Smudge and their 450 cows. The large 190-hectare property gives the animals lots of room to roam freely.

Kevin spent many years as a mechanic and Caroline a school teacher, but after a change of heart, they took up dairy farming and haven’t looked back.

Farming for the past 12 years, they began in Taupo and moved up to the Karaka farm two years ago.

They have three children - a son who farms in Taupo, another son who is a mechanic in Hastings and a daughter who is a secondary school student and skilled equestrian rider.
