Over the past year, the Tax Working Group has been examining further improvements in the structure, fairness and balance of New Zealand’s tax system.

On Thursday 21 February they released the final iteration of their highly anticipated “Future of Tax” report, consisting of a number of recommendations as to what action the Government should take to change tax for the better.

Head to ‘Examining the Future of Tax’ to hear industry experts, Kirk Hope and David Snell, dissect the report, highlighting potential advantages and pin-pointing areas of concern. Who will benefit most from the proposed changes? What implications are there for business? They’ll also share their predictions as to which suggestions the Government is likely to take on board, and whether or not the decisions will work in favour of business.

Kirk Hope is Chief Executive of BusinessNZ, New Zealand’s largest business advocacy body and is a member of the Government’s Tax Working Group. His comprehensive experience and profile earned through two decades in government-facing roles has given him privileged access to Ministers, MPs, government officials, and community groups to ensure that business interests are represented throughout the policy making process.

Kirk was previously CEO of the New Zealand Bankers Association and Executive Director of the Financial Services Federation. He is a qualified barrister and solicitor, and was previously a member of the Commercial and Business Law Committee of the New Zealand Law Society.

David Snell is New Zealand Tax Policy Leader at EY. With over 20 years of tax experience, advising Ministers, businesses of all sizes and working across government, David is in demand as a media commentator and presenter on tax policy issues.

David worked with Treasury until 2014, leading policy development for many tax issues, specialising in international tax and base maintenance questions. He also advised select committees, represented New Zealand at the OECD, supported the McLeod Tax Review and the Victoria University Tax Working Group and negotiated Double Taxation Agreements.
