‘Domestic Bits’ is an exhibition which displays just a small portion of the archaeological material retrieved during the 2017 earthquake repair work at Stoddart Cottage in Diamond Harbour. These artefacts provide a fascinating insight into the day to day life of the Stoddart family who lived at the cottage and farmed the surrounding area. Margaret Stoddart, born at the cottage, would go on to be one of New Zealand’s foremost 19th century artists.
The exhibition will be held at the cottage which is open to the public 10 am to 4 pm on Friday, Saturday, Sunday, most public holidays and at other times by arrangement. The cottage also has regular art exhibitions and a local craft co-op store.
The cottage is in walking distance, uphill, from the Diamond Harbour Ferry. There is a café nearby for refreshments and food – so make a day of it and visit one of Canterbury’s oldest cottages and its newly unearthed archaeological treasures!
